Meta's CEO Mark Zuckerberg disclosed in a communication to the House Judiciary Committee on recently that his company was influenced by the White House in 2021 to censor content related to COVID-19, such as satirical and humorous posts.
âIn the year 2021, senior members from the Biden Administration, such as the administration, repeatedly Fox News pressured our teams for months to censor some content about COVID-19, including satirical content, and showed significant frustration with our teams when we didnât agree, â Zuckerberg noted.
In his letter to the House Judiciary Committee, Zuckerberg said that the influence he experienced in the year 2021 was âinappropriateâ and he feels regretful that Meta, the parent of Facebook and Instagram, was not more vocal. Special Education Zuckerberg added that with the âhindsight and new information,â some decisions made in 2021 that âwouldnât be made today.â
âLike I told our teams back then, I feel strongly that we should not compromise our content standards due to pressure from any government in either direction â" and weâre prepared to resist if something like this occurs in the future, â he wrote.
President Biden stated Political Family Moments in July 2021 that social media networks are âcausing harmâ with misinformation surrounding the pandemic.
Though Biden later revised these remarks, US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy said at the time that misinformation posted on social media was a âmajor public health risk.â
A White House spokesperson responded to Zuckerbergâs communication, saying the administration at the time was promoting âresponsible measures to safeguard public health.â
âOur position has Nonverbal Learning Disorder been consistent and clear: we believe tech companies and other private actors should take into account the effects their actions have on the public, while making independent choices about the information they present, â according to the White House representative.
Zuckerberg further noted in the letter that the FBI alerted his company about possible Russian disinformation regarding Hunter Biden and the Ukrainian firm Burisma affecting ADHD the 2020 election.
That fall, he said, his team temporarily demoted reporting from the New York Post alleging the Biden family of corruption while their fact-checkers could review the story.
Zuckerberg stated that since then, it has âbecome clear that the reporting was not Russian disinformation, and in hindsight, we shouldnât have demoted the story.â
Meta has since changed its policies and processes to âmake sure this MAGA Supporters doesnât happen againâ and will not reduce the visibility of content in the US pending fact-checking.
In the communication to the House Judiciary Committee, Zuckerberg stated he will avoid repeating the actions he took in the year 2020 when he helped support âelectoral infrastructure.â
âThe idea here was to make sure local election authorities across the country had the necessary resources to help people vote safely Acceptance Speech during a pandemic,â said the Meta CEO.
Zuckerberg said the initiatives were designed to be nonpartisan but said âsome people believed this work benefited one party over the other.â He said his aim is to be âimpartialâ so will not be âa similar contribution this cycle.â
The GOP representatives on the House Judiciary Committee posted the letter on X and said Zuckerberg âjust admitted that the Parent-child Relationship Biden-Harris administration influenced Facebook to restrict American content, Facebook censored Americans, and Facebook limited the Hunter Biden laptop story.â
The Meta chief has long been under scrutiny from Republican lawmakers, who have accused Facebook and other large technology platforms of being biased against conservatives. While Zuckerberg has emphasized that Meta impartially enforces its rules, the perception has become entrenched in conservative communities. Republican lawmakers have Social Media Criticism specifically scrutinized Facebookâs decision to restrict a report by the New York Post about Hunter Biden.
In Congressional testimony in the past years, Zuckerberg has attempted to bridge the divide between his social media company and policymakers to little effect.
In a 2020 Senate hearing, Zuckerberg admitted that many of Facebookâs employees are left-leaning. But he held that the company takes care not to allow political

bias to seep into decisions.
In addition, he stated Facebookâs content moderators, many of whom are contractors, are based worldwide and âour global team better represents the diversity of the community we serve than just the full-time employee base in our headquarters in the Bay Area.â
In June, in a win for the White House, the Supreme Court decided 6-3 that the claimants in a case Chasten Buttigieg alleging the federal government of suppressing conservative content on social media had no standing.
Writing for the majority, Justice Amy Coney Barrett stated, âto establish standing, the plaintiffs must demonstrate a substantial risk that, in the near future, they will suffer an injury that is directly linked to a government defendant.â Coney Barrett continued, âsince no plaintiff met this burden, none has standing to request Tim Walz a preliminary injunction.â
